In The Spotlight - Wellington Water Watchers

Background: Since 2007, Wellington Water Watchers have been dedicated to the protection, restoration and conservation of drinking water in Guelph and Wellington County and to educating the public about threats to the watershed. Consisting of dedicated professional staff members and an executive board, they rely heavily on the generosity of local volunteers.

Challenge: One challenge the Wellington Water Watchers have embraced is the ongoing education of communities to the threat to our water supply. They have introduced a widely received and highly successful program called the Message in the Bottle Challenge.

This challenge is directed at educating elementary school children on the effects of water bottles to our environment. The program placed over 50,000 stainless steel water bottles in the hands of students in Guelph and Wellington County allowing them to dramatically lower their carbon footprint while saving parents and schools money.  This program hopes to eliminate up to 100 tonnes of carbon emissions per year and keep large volumes of onetime use disposable drink containers from entering the waste stream.

Requirements: As community educators, event sponsors, and with an increasing media presence, Wellington Water Watchers were looking for a simple display that reflected their Eco identity.
